Chemistry & Quality

Argan oil comes from the kernels of the Argania Spinosa tree, one of the oldest tress in the world. It is a natural organic oil made by the Berber women of southern Morocco. Pure argan oil has been used in Morocco for centuries to nourish and protect the hair, skin and nails. Argan oil contains many chemical elements which are beneficial such as natural tocopherols, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, squalene and antioxidants.

Possessing 80 % monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, Omega – 9 and 6, and a significant proportion of linoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid it acts as waterproofing the skin, creating a protective barrier and maintaining elasticity.

Rich in carotenoids, terpenoids, polyphenols and tocopherols, all powerful antioxidants against free radicals – which are responsible for skin aging. The palmetic, stearic, oleic acids and the phytosterols have anti-inflammatory action and act on remedial skin tissue.

It also contains squalene, a unique and rare element against skin cancer.

Argan oil has an interesting content of essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid (omega 6), which is involved in membrane fluidity and strengthen the barrier of the epidermis. These essential fatty acids help the skin gain flexibility and tone, becoming more resistant to the elements.
This action, beneficial against skin aging, is reinforced by a very high rate of gamma tocopherols, which have high antioxidant action and help neutralize free radicals. They protect the cell membranes against lipid oxidation, thereby slowing the process of skin aging.

Furthermore, Argan oil is also rich in sterols, especially schottenol (44-49%) which has inhibitory properties of cell development. Argan oil can thus advantageously replace cholesterol in cosmetics without risking result in increased blood cholesterol levels. In the unsaponifiable fraction, five triterpene alcohols were identified, lupeol (7.1%) has anti-inflammatory properties. Its specific biochemical composition gives argan oil interesting properties for applications in cosmetics. Also present are polyphenols and carotenoids in abundance.

Thanks to its high content of vitamin E, Argan oil is one of the most nourishing, anti-wrinkle and anti-aging oils in the market, gaining its nickname “liquid gold”. What makes is even more special is its non-greasy properties.

Our Sources

Mogador liquid gold 100% pure argan oil is sustainably sourced from Morocco and genuinely meets ECO and organic certifications. It is not tested on animals.

The Argan tree is protected by UNESCO as a world cultural treasure – as the area in which it grows (once covering the whole of North Africa) shrinks constantly. Argan oil is considered one of the rarest (and most valuable) oils as 100 kilos of dried fruit (production 8.6 trees) and 8 to 10 hours of labour is required to produce only 1 litre of pure oil.

All stages of the work done are by a women’s cooperative in Morocco. The 57 Berber women that work with us utilise handmade techniques that have been passed down through generations combined with modern cold press machinery to lock in the nutrients to produce the highest quality

Not all argan oil on the market is original and pure. In fact plenty of products ‘featuring’ Argan oil are on the market. However, these products do not possess the unique properties, strength and value of 100% pure oil. Once blended, Argan oil does not operate with the same mechanism of action, thus negating its value.

100% pure cold pressed Argan oil is the gold standard for this oil type. Mogador liquid gold is produced with high quality cold pressed machinery and techniques. The machines were made in Morocco (designed in Germany) which provides additional income to the local economy. The technology and training was provided by a German governmental organisation, Deutche Gesselshaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbit (GIZ) GmbH. This innovation has allowed us to work with the co-operative to ensure the highest quality oil in optimal composition in its natural form as well as sustainable development and resource management. Importantly, the profits are shared with the people whom need it most in the rural Sahara.
